University of Batangas hosted the Philippine Guidance Counseling Association Batangas Chapter’s 1st General Assembly and Election of Officers with the theme, “Advocacy for Mental Health through Counseling and Listening Skills”, in partnership with Department of Health (DOH) and National Center for Mental Health, last June 19, 2018 at the Juan Javier Culture and Arts Building of the University.
The event was well attended with more than 300 guidance and counseling practitioners and peer facilitators in the province of Batangas. It was also graced by prominent people in the field of counseling, Mr. Danilo Talusa, President of the Peer Organization of the Philippines, Dr. Sheila Marie G. Hocson, former PGAC President and Dr. Adelaida Gines, newly Elected PGCA President. The assembly helped the professionals and peer facilitators with counseling and listening skills that will aid them in answering to the needs of individuals with mental health problems. The participants were also equipped with learnings that will help them uphold soundness of mind in order to be more effective in their profession.
In the same event, the University’s very own, Dr. Gladiola A. Eje-Dimaculangan was elected as the first president of the PGCA Batangas Chapter. According to her, the chartering of the PGCA -Batangas is truly a significant milestone for guidance and counseling practitioners in the province as well as the peer facilitators whose function is to be the helping arms of the guidance office in assisting students.
Indeed, the said gathering will be a big step in forming the skilled focal group that will be advocates of mental health awareness and will serve as support system for persons in need of mental health assistance.
